    Changes in the nature of the economy, coupled with a general decline in demand during the mid 1970s requiredfirms in many industries to adopt new organizational and management practices. This paper considers the extent to which the practices of firms in the building industry were suited to these changing conditions. It concludes that these practices and the general characteristics of many firms were inappropriate to their needs. The paper reviews some of the difficulties which firms encountered in adapting to changing environmental conditions and discusses the importance of leadership to the effective management of change.
